Visit Borrowdale Valley, Lake District

The Leathes Head enjoys a central position in the heart of the Borrowdale Valley with superb views out across the valley and easy access to the market town of Keswick.

Borrowdale Valley starts in the Central Lake District and runs northwards carrying the River Derwent into Derwent Water. It is lined with rugged crags, small valleys teaming with fresh water streams and fells rising steeply from the lake.

At its southern end Borrowdale Valley splits into three: Watendlath, Stonethwaite and Seathwaite, each with its own individual character. A walk up Cat Bells or High Seat rewards you with magnificent views of the three valleys from the summit.

Leave your car at the Hotel for the day and explore the surrounding area on foot. Grange Village with its double arch bridge is only a short walk away at the head of Derwent Water, with spectacular views down the valley to Keswick. There are also plenty of circular walks, which are less strenuous and stay lower down on the valley floor but offer some magnificent views along the way. Enjoy the walks from the back of The Leathes Head, which will take you up some of the quietest paths in the Lakes, yet offer some of the most stunning views, our own little hidden gem.

At the end of Borrowdale Valley lies Honister Pass and its route over to Buttermere and Lorton. Take a short break at the Honister Slate Mine Quarry where you can enjoy the Museum and Shop. The mine's location at the top of another valley ringed with mountains is glorious on a clear day and mysterious in the cloud. Car parking is available there and there are plenty of walks in this area.

The whole Borrowdale Valley is ringed by glorious fells, beautiful meandering rivers and hillside covered in many different species of tree. This valley really is a pleasure for the outdoor enthusiasts and especially for the seasoned hill walkers who can enjoy some of the best hill walking in the country. Borrowdale Valley truly is a special and unique area and we cannot wait to share its delights with you.
